These records of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service consist primarily of assessment lists (1864-1872), compiled by Andrew J. Simmons and N. P. Langford, mostly for the Virginia City area of Montana Territory, listing date, name, residence, occupation, valuation, etc. Also included are a transcript of a long letter (1866) from Nathaniel P. Langford to his superior J. W. Taylor, reporting on his accomplishments. In addition there are lists of office salaries, expenses, uncollected taxes, etc.
